The state government has rejected a land claim over Newcastle’s rail corridor by the Awabakal Aboriginal Land Council.
It lodged the claim on January 7, saying the rail corridor held cultural significance.
But this week, a letter from the Minister for Natural Resources, Lands and Water Kevin Humphries notified the group it was unsuccessful, saying “I am satisifed that when the claim was made the land was not vested in Her Majesty.”
Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp says he has written to Mr Humphries asking him to explain the decision.
