PORT STEPHENS RESIDENTS PICK UP THE PIECES OF A BUSHFIRE CATASTROPHE

It’s been the toughest of days for residents of Salt Ash at Port Stephens, who’ve returned home to tally the cost of yesterday’s bushfires.
Two houses were lost, and about 20 other buildings, including sheds and garages, were destroyed.
Fire also came close to homes at Fingal Bay, while one near Singleton scorched 360 hectares, but is now under control.
A cool change overnight brought a reprieve for firefighters.
However a furore has broken out over hazard reduction burns.
