Tamworth’s flying fox population has been labelled as an ‘infestation’ by locals.
Local MP Kevin Anderson is calling for a re-think on their status as an endangered species, so something can be done to manage the population.
“There needs to be some work done with the scientific committee that puts things on the endangered species list, go back to the drawing board and look at it. I think we’re in a different environment now from when these things were listed on the endangered list many many years ago.”
Under the current endangered category, management options are limited.
More than 140,000 flying foxes have now made their home in Tamworth, causing havoc for residents and businesses.
