FIRST VIGIL FOR MEMORIAL GROVE

There was an emotional vigil at the Memorial Grove in Newcastle’s Civic Park.

It’s the first time an ANZAC service has been held at the site since it was established by the community in 1961.

The grove is home to the ashes of 51 diggers, and veterans have battled to maintain it in recent years, amid fears it would be removed.

Among those who paid their respects, Don McCattie, who designed and sculpted the centrepiece.
