Hazmat team called in after 44-gallon drum washes up on NSW beach

Fire and Rescue crews tangled with an “unusual” hazardous materials situation on the weekend.

Firefighters were called to South Kingscliff Beach on the New South Wales North Coast at about 7.30am yesterday.

They found a 44-gallon drum (which holds about 166 litres).

Markings on the drum indicated it contained “hydrochloric acid”, NSW Fire and Rescue said.

A specialist hazmat team from Tweed Heads was called in and, wearing protective spillage suits, firefighters placed the drum in a hazmat bin before disposing of it.

It’s not known how the drum came to be in the ocean.
