Iconic Australian dessert maker Sara Lee sold after going into administration

The future of Australian dessert maker Sara Lee has been secured, with the iconic company being bought after going into administration late last year.

The popular frozen dessert manufacturer went into voluntary administration in October, putting the jobs of around 200 people at risk.

However, today it was announced Australians Klark and Brooke Quinn have bought the company.

Sara Lee has been selling desserts around Australia and New Zealand for decades, and will continue to do so for a while longer after it was bought out of administration. (Facebook)

“We are a small Aussie family that shared in the tradition of having Sara Lee apple pie and vanilla ice cream every Sunday night at the dinner table and could not be more proud to put the Aussie-made and owned stamp on the Sara Lee brand,” they said after the acquisition.

Administrators FTI Consulting said the Quinns have proven success in the fast-moving consumer goods sector and were involved in the purchase and turnaround of chocolate maker Darrell Lea.

Today’s sale will see all 200 jobs saved, FTI added.

“Sara Lee is an iconic brand and category leader,” administrator Vaughan Strawbridge said.

“Staff and consumers have rallied behind the business during this tough time, and we are so grateful to the loyal workforce and management team who have made this process a success while they have continued to produce amazing products.

“We have enjoyed working with the Sara Lee team and are pleased to see them come through this process. Many staff have been with Sara Lee a long time and we have seen their passion for the business.

“In addition to the staff, we would also like to thank all the suppliers who have continued to support the business and to the customers, who have been vital to the continuation of the business. We look forward to its future success.”

While the sale is yet to be formally completed, it is expected to be concluded in the coming weeks.

Sara Lee has rights to operate in Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia and the Middle East.

Established in 1971 in the NSW town of Lisarow, it makes a range of frozen desserts including cheesecakes, pies, crumbles and ice cream.
