MAITLAND RECEIVES FUNDS TO UPGRADE TAXI RANKS

Maitland City Council will receive $200,000 to upgrade four taxi ranks, as part of the Federal Government’s Taxi Security scheme.
The scheme supports 32 councils to receive over $3.8-million to install better environmental design to deter crime and anti-social behaviour around their taxi ranks.
The scheme is an expansion of the successful Safer Suburbs program that has funded 65 projects worth more than $20 million since 2007 to improve community safety.
Federal Member for Hunter, Joel Fitzgibbon says the funds will make taxi stands safer for everyone. “Cabbies have been vulnerable to attacks from people picked up at badly lit ranks,” he said.
“Better lighting will make it safer for both drivers and passengers”.
