WATER TRADING SCHEME HAS CRITICS

Last week the state government announced efforts to provide a solution to high water prices.

The one year trial of a water trading scheme is set to commence in coming weeks.

Users with left over water allocations will be asked to sell the remainder to users in other areas.

Peel Valley irrigators and Tamworth Regional Council aren’t convinced it will drive down prices.

“The only way you’re going to bring down price, unless government subsidises it and we’re not necessarily into subsidies, is really to activate the resource. So you know there’s a reasonable allocation of water in the Peel, but not a lot of it is used, so we need to activate that.”
