MORE SPECULATION ON FUTURE OF GRAFTON JAIL
The chances of Grafton jail reopening have improved following the release of figures showing the nation’s prison population has hit a 10 year high.
Union spokesman Tony King says there are now 33,000 prisoners in Australia with about a third housed in New South Wales.
He claims overcrowding in correctional centres could see the need for Grafton jail to be fully used again.
The facility closed with the loss of a hundred jobs two years ago and now accommodates a small number of remand prisoners.
A state government spokesperson says no decision on the jail is imminent.
