A man has been charged with assaulting an off-duty police officer at a junior soccer match in Merewether last week.
The 34-year-old was allegedly behaving offensively towards people in the car park at Myamblah Crescent Oval last Saturday, when the officer stepped in.
He was then allegedly assaulted, even after identifying himself as a police officer.
The man has been granted conditional bail and will face Newcastle Local Court on June 11.
