NBN Rewind 23 – Newspapers

With the rise of NBN News from March 1962, our cameras covered far older local media companies such as the 1843 Maitland Mercury.

This proud local newspaper had been putting ink to paper for more than a century, when flickering TV news images first appeared in the Hunter.

Our early 1960s visit showed viewers the skilled efforts required for the daily paper, a people-intensive process that put stories and images into print.

Local newspapers like the Maitland Mercury have been cornerstones of their communities across the Hunter Valley, very much part of daily life for many.

The Scone Advocate another proud local paper began printing in 1887.Serving the communities of Scone, Aberdeen and Murrurundi.

And the Cessnock Eagle kept the coal fields informed between 1913 and 1978.

Another reminder from our news archive that shows us how much things have changed and the importance of local media across the regions.
