CRUISE SHIP TERMINAL PROPOSED FOR WICKHAM
A Hunter group has submitted a proposal to the state government for a cruise ship terminal at Wickham.
The Urban Development Institute of Australia also has plans to include restaurant, retail and hotel space at the site in the Throsby basin.
It believes the proposal would generate tourism and bring jobs to the city.
“In the interest of supporting local business and ultimately creating more jobs, it makes sense to look at locating the cruise terminal on the waterfront at Wickham, close to the proposed Wickham interchange,” said UDIA Hunter Chair, Geoff Rock.
“If the terminal is moved, those passengers will arrive within walking distance to the CBD, automatically boosting pedestrian traffic in the centre each year.”
Newcastle currently has a temporary cruise ship terminal, located at the old dockyard site at Carrington.
