AXE USED DURING EAST MAITLAND SERVICE STATION ROBBERY

Police are investigating an armed robbery in the Hunter early this morning.

Just after 6.30am, officers were called to a service station on Newcastle Road at East Maitland.

Police were told that about an hour earlier, a man armed with a tomahawk entered the building, before jumping on the counter and demanding cash.

He threatened the attendant, a 28-year-old man, before stealing the draw of the cash register and leaving.

The attendant was shaken but not injured.

The man was last seen heading west on High Street.

As investigations continue, police are looking for a man of Caucasian appearance, aged in his 20s, with an average build and about 170-175cm tall.

He was wearing a black hooded jumper, a green jacket, a black baseball cap, pants and running shoes.

Anyone with more information about the incident is urged to call Maitland Police Station.
