ELEVEN LAKE MAC STARS RECOGNISED AT AWARDS CEREMONY

Community advocates, rising stars and sporting talents were among those to receive recognition at the annual Lake Mac Awards last night.

Jonathon Power was named the prestigious 2021 Lake Mac Ambassador for his selfless and extensive work with people with a disability and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Having taken inspiration from his parents who both have lifelong disabilities, Mr Power established Empowered Community Services in 2017.

His mother, who is profoundly deaf accompanied him as he accepted his award.

“I’ve grown up in Lake Macquarie my whole life, and to be recognised as someone to represent the City is an honour,” he said.

Jasmine Seidel was named Lake Mac Young Citizen of the year for her support of various organisations, including Heartkids and the oncology ward at John Hunter Children’s Hospital.

“I think helping people is something we should all do,” Jasmine said after receiving her award.

NSW SES volunteer Christine Speer took out the Volunteer of the Year award for more than 40 years of service.

Rugby League star Hannah Southwell was named the Sports Star for the year, whilst student and swimmer Emily Jones won the Rising Sports Star award.

The ceremony was hosted by NBN News’s Jane Goldsmith at Belmont 16s, with Mayor Cr Kay Fraser in attendance to present awards.

The night was enjoyed by many and celebrated as a tribute to the community for staying strong during the troubling months of 2020.
