POLICE OFFICERS RECOGNISED FOR SIEGE BRAVERY

37 New England police officers have been rewarded for their service to the community.

Among those honoured at a ceremony in Armidale were Sergeant Mark Garvey, Senior Constable Anthony Pearce and Sergeant John Walkowiak who received the Commissioner’s Unit Citation for their role in a siege.

In September 2003, a man held police at bay at a Glen Innes service station for 12 hours, before setting himself and his car on fire.

The New England officers were among those who dragged him from the burning vehicle, before he was admitted to hospital suffering serious burns.
