Armidale Dumaresq Council Mayor Jim Maher has announced he will run as an Independent in the Northern Tablelands by-election on May 25.
Mr Maher says he made the decision after receiving widespread community support.
Mr Maher isn’t required to stand down as mayor in the lead up to the election.
