DETECTIVE ASSAULTED AT BUSY NEWCASTLE INTERSECTION
Dramatic vision has emerged of the moment a detective was assaulted in the Newcastle suburb of Hamilton.
Posted on social media by Newcastle Police District, the vision shows a Nelson Bay man launching a tirade of abuse at the occupants of a vehicle, at the intersection on Beaumont Street around 10:40 on Friday morning.
Nearby detectives, who were travelling in an unmarked police car, then intervened, only for the 40-year-old to turn his attention to their vehicle, kicking it, before punching the driver through an open window.
The man, who is currently on parole, was eventually arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with three offences including causing malicious damage.
The injured detective was taken to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
