INVESTIGATION SHOWS GAS NOT TO BLAME FOR MINE DEATHS

Mine safety investigators say gas wasn’t to blame for last month’s wall collapse at a mine near Cessnock, that killed two workers.

Authorities have examined the Austar underground mine’s gas monitoring systems, but they showed no evidence of elevated gas readings before, during or after the tragedy.

Seven workers were underground at the time, operating a bolter miner and shuttle car.

Analysis of data is continuing, and a report is being prepared for the department of trade and investment.
