All beaches in the Ballina shire have been closed for the next 24 hours, after a man was bitten by a shark.
The 25-year-old was surfing with friends at Sharpes Beach this morning, when he felt something bump his board and knock him into the water.
He suffered a small wound to his lower right leg and was taken to Ballina Hospital by his friends.
Police are working with other authorities to determine the species of shark.
