UNIVERSITY FUNDING SHORTFALL LIES IN THE HANDS OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

Those campaigning for a University of New England Campus at Tamworth, now hope the federal government could provide extra funding, after the state government’s contribution fell $16-million short.

Member for New England Barnaby Joyce, though, says it’s not that simple.

“You can’t go back and say I want 10, and then find out that you want 23. It just doesn’t work like that.”

Even if the money was available, he says the funding needed from the federal government wouldn’t stop there.

“The biggest cost for the university is not actually the building, it’s Commonwealth funded places. They would be the big cost for us.”
