Two earthquakes shake regional NSW overnight
Residents in two parts of New South Wales were woken in the night by earthquakes just hours apart.
Just after 11pm yesterday, a quake registering a magnitude of 3.8 hit the Orana region in the north-central area of the state, north of Nyngan.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of around 10 kilometres, but the epicentre appeared to be in an isolated part of the region.
Just over two hours later, a second quake hit in Muswellbrook in the Hunter Valley.
This quake had a magnitude of 3.9, but was at a much shallower depth of only three kilometres.
The epicentre was located at the Maxwell Underground Mine, a large open-cut mine close to the town of Muswellbrook.
The Hunter Valley is no stranger to earthquakes, with the most significant occurring in 1989, when 13 people died.
There are no reports of major damage or injuries from either of the earthquakes overnight.
