WELCOME BOOST TO WATER SAFETY PROGRAM IN GUNNEDAH

The Gunida Gunyah program has welcomed a $54-thousand grant to train five new swim coaches and teach young children water safety in Gunnedah.

“We really would like to develop the program so they’re not only safe in the pool but we’ve also reached out to Lake Keepit and they’re going to do us program for us as well,” Tracey Reid, Grant Writer with Gunida Gunyah.

The funding is aimed at regional and Indigenous communities to see professional swimming lessons keep kids safe this summer.

“We’ve seen staggering results over last summer, 5.6% reduction in drowning deaths. We were at 36 which is still 36 too many and every one of those is a tragedy but we’re certainly looking to drive that number down this summer,” Troy Grant, Emergency Services Minister.
