CRASH DEATH PROMPTS POLICE CRITICAL INVESTIGATION

A critical incident investigation is underway, after a 60-year-old man died in a crash in Cessnock earlier on Thursday.

Around midday, Hunter Valley Police were making inquiries to locate a 60-year-old man.

Shortly after, it’s believed the man driving a Nissan Navara, saw police on Richmond Vale Road, before driving off at speed and hitting a tree.

He was the sole occupant of the car.

Officers performed CPR on him before paramedics arrived, but he died at the scene.

Newcastle City Police District officers will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, that investigation will then be subject to an independent review and will be monitored by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

Anyone with information that may assist is urged to come forward.
