CONTAINER DEBRIS COVERS MEREWETHER BEACH

Months on from a mass shipping container spill off the Hunter, MORE debris is now washing ashore.

Today, the clean-up zone was Merewether Beach… and the tide of rubbish could continue over summer.

FULL STATEMENT FROM ROADS & MARITIME SERVICES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ANGUS MITCHELL:

Several hundred small plastic containers of lanolin this morning washed up on Merewether Beach in Newcastle from what is believed to be one of the containers lodged on the ocean floor from YM Efficiency.

City of Newcastle beach cleaning crews have recovered most of the containers, which are in good condition, suggesting one of the containers may have recently been opened.

Roads and Maritime Services continues to lead the NSW shoreline clean up, on an as needs basis, of the 81 containers which were lost from YM Efficiency on 1 June this year.

Clean up crews and the insurer will carry out early morning patrols on all Newcastle beaches in the next few days to identify and clean up any further debris.
