TRUCK DRIVER CHARGED OVER DOUBLE FATAL M1 CRASH

More details are emerging, after yesterday’s horrific double fatal crash on the M1, near Somersby.

About 4.50pm, emergency services responded to reports of a crash involving a truck and five cars, just north of the Mooney Mooney bridge.

On arrival, officers found a truck had crashed into the back of one of the cars and caught fire.

A 52-year-old man and his 19-year-old male passenger died in the crash. A 75-year-old woman was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital for further treatment, while at least another four women were involved in the incident.

Hero onlookers frantically dragged people from their vehicles.

A 30-year-old male truck driver, believed to be Newcastle based, has been charged two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death and one count of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm. He was also charged with negligent driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

His licence was suspended and he was granted conditional bail, to appear at Gosford Local Court on August 21.

The truck company, MWP Transport, has released a statement regarding the incident:

“We have been shocked and dismayed by this terrible accident. Our very deepest condolences go to all those affected. We will be working cooperatively with police and the authorities to aid their investigation in every way we possibly can.”
