PORT MACQUARIE TAKES PART IN ANNUAL WHALE CENSUS
All eyes were on the ocean at Port Macquarie’s Lighthouse today for the annual whale census.
Organised by marine research group ORCCA and National Parks, the census relies on volunteers to get outdoors and record how many whales are spotted.
“A lot of people have come out and it’s been really good, I think everybody that’s come has been in a position to see some of the whales coming past. I think our count is up to 100-150 whales now” – Andy Marshall, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.
It’s estimated 30,000 humpback whales will migrate north this year.
