A 36-year-old man has been charged over an alleged assault which left another man fighting for life.
Emergency crews found a 59-year-old man with serious head injuries in a unit on Fowler Street, Hamilton South about 9.30am yesterday.
He was taken to John Hunter Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
Police arrested a 36-year-old at the apartment block, charging him with grievous bodily harm and destroy or damage property.
Initial inquiries suggest the men are known to each other.
He will front court Newcastle Local Court today.
