WOMAN BURNED AFTER CIGARETTE IGNITES BEDDING

A woman has sustained burns to her face and arm, after a cigarette ignited bedding at a Tamworth nursing home.

Emergency services were called to Nazareth House on Manilla Road, shortly after eight o’clock last night.

“When the crews arrived they found that the staff had quickly extinguished the blaze with some installed fire protection or a fire extinguisher that was there. Which was really good, because it probably averted a fatality.”

It’s believed the woman – aged in her 50s – was smoking in bed, before her sheets and mattress caught alight.

“When they arrived they were presented with a lady who had burns to her face, her right upper arm and her thigh. Partial and full thickness burns.”

She was taken to hospital for treatment.
