GLASSING ATTACK BELIEVED TO BE UNPROVOKED

A man has been hospitalised after an alleged glassing attack in Newcastle overnight.
Police say a 35-year-old male was with a group of friends at a Hunter Street venue around 7pm, when another man unexpectedly thrust a glass into his face, causing significant lacerations.
Staff detained the attacker, a 37-year-old from New Lambton Heights, until police arrived.
He was later charged with malicious wounding.
Police believe the attack was unprovoked and the men were not known to each other.
The victim was taken to John Hunter Hospital, treated and released.
