ABORIGINAL YOUTH CONNECT WITH THEIR CULTURE

A group of Aboriginal Wingham High School students today got to learn a bit out their culture, during a visit to the Cattai Wetlands.

“Our children have to learn, but we can’t teach them from the class room we have to show them what it means and that’s our old way,” Aunty Fay said.

“It’s good to learn our culture and or ancestors, what they’ve done,” student Danny said.

The program is designed to bring students together with elders and involves a number of local schools.

“Once they hit that year 10 age were seeing signs of disengagement from school,” Sean Ploder from TIDE said.
