NEWS UPDATE: OCTOBER 7, 2016

Here’s Paul Lobb with an NBN news update.

  • Police in the Hunter Valley are trying to piece together what led to the shooting death of a woman at Maitland. Police were called to Bella Street at Horseshoe Bend just after 3 this morning, following reports of shots fired. A 56 year old Maitland woman’s body was found at the scene.  Her 58-year-old estranged husband was arrested and has been charged with murder.
  • The men known as the Budgie Nine have jetted in to Sydney today after being freed from jail in Malaysia. The group has been reluctant to say much about their ordeal.
  • The last ever Ford to be built in Australia has rolled off the production line this morning, with the car maker closing the doors on local manufacturing.
  • Sad news with the passing of sports journalist Rebecca Wilson from breast cancer. The 54 year old is being remembered as fearless and passionate, and as a pioneer for women in sports journalism.
  • And dramatic scenes off Queensland’s North Stradbroke Island this morning when a whale became stranded on a sandbank.  At around 7.30, rescue crews were called to the scene, where they discovered the struggling humpback and it’s calf. The young whale was nudging it’s mother in an apparent attempt to free her while two other humpbacks swam nearby. Fortunately, the result everyone was hoping for – with the whale freeing itself and swimming out to deeper water.
