MAN CHARGED AFTER BRIEF PURSUIT IN NEWCASTLE

A 27-year-old man has been arrested and charged following an alleged pursuit in Newcastle yesterday afternoon.

Shortly after 2pm, officers attempted to stop a Honda Jazz travelling along Sandgate Road in Shortland.

The driver allegedly failed to stop, leading officers on a brief pursuit.

The vehicle continued along Minmi Road then proceeded through a red light and collided with another vehicle.

The driver and an 18-year-old female passenger then fled the scene on foot.

The pair were arrested a short time later. A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in locating a firearm and drugs, believed to be methylamphetamine.

The man was refused bail and will appear in front of Newcastle Local Court today.
