Marine rescue authorities have suspended a search for a missing yachtsman off Port Stephens due to failing light and deteriorating weather. Police say the sailor aged in his 60s was swept overboard by a large wave when the 12 metre yacht was positioned North of Broughton Island around midday. The man was not wearing a lifejacket.
Two helicopters taking part in the search have returned to base. Police and Marine Rescue vessels are escorting the yacht and remaining crew back to Port Stephens.
The yacht had been returning to Sydney after competing in the Pittwater to Coffs Harbour race.
