LOCAL MAN URGES THE NORTH WEST TO TALK
A Tamworth man will set off on a 190 kilometre bike ride to Inverell on Sunday, on something of a personal journey, that he also hopes will raise mental health awareness in the region.
Chris Berkhout’s 19 year old son Jarrod took his own life five years ago, and he wants to eliminate the stigma surrounding talking about suicide.
“This trip is my therapy. My coming to terms with it, and dealing with his suicide, yeah. I don’t think I could do it any other way.”
With Inverell Jarrod’s final resting place, it’ll double as a visit to his son.
“I mean it’s one of the hardest things to do, is to bury your son. But my heart’s always there, it’s already at Inverell in a way, in that sense.”
