ALLEGED ARSONIST FACING MORE CHARGES FOR HUNTER FIRES

A probationary member of the Rural Fire Service is facing more charges, after he allegedly started a number of bushfires in the Hunter.

Strike Force Billet was established to investigate more than 100 fires in the Cessnock area between August 2015 and April this year.

Late last month, a 20-year-old man was arrested at a fire at Lochinvar, with officers also allegedly seizing accelerants and mobile phones from his car.

He was charged with arson offences, but police have now added several other charges including two counts of deliberately lighting scrub fires and damaging property by fire.

The man has been refused bail and is due to face Maitland Local Court next Monday.
