MORE THAN A THOUSAND PEOPLE FAREWELLED LOCAL ACTIVIST

It was standing room only at Newcastle’s City Hall today, as more than a thousand people farewelled local activist Jimmy Wright.

The Aboriginal rights pioneer was the founder of training organisation Yarnteen, the Yowies Sports Association, and was the first chief executive of the Awabakal Aboriginal Cooperative.

Mourners were told he had a profound effect on the indigenous community, and his contribution to our country can never be understated.

Among those paying their respects, sports star Anthony Mundine.

Jimmy Wright was 66.
