A group of north west school students onboard a light aircraft had a lucky escape on Tuesday afternoon, after the plane’s engine lost power shortly after taking off from Port Macquarie Airport.
Police say the pilot attempted to land, but the aircraft overshot the runway, stopping just short of fields where a state school touch football competition was being held.
The plane was taking players from the tournament back to Gunnedah.
Thankfully, no one was injured.
