Reduced speed zones are to be introduced on the Bucketts Way, between the Pacific Highway and Gloucester.
The RTA carried out a review, looking for more uniformity with speed zones but also found that safety considerations warranted speed reductions.
Despite recent upgrades many 100-kilometre an hour sections will become 90 zones, while approaches to towns and built up areas will be cut to 80 and 50 kilometres an hour.
The RTA says the changes will add two minutes travel time to the journey.
