A policeman who cheated death after being shot at Nelson Bay more than 20 years ago was laid to rest by his former colleagues today.
It was a moment of madness that shattered the peace of Nelson Bay in 1993.
Sergeant Jeff Smith was critically wounded, the gunman took his own life.
Sergeant Smith never fully recovered, but went on to serve with the RAAF and SES.
He was 61.
