Hunter residents have been warned to brace for winds of up to 110 kilometres an hour this afternoon.

The State Emergency Service is advising people to keep their cars under cover, children and pets indoors and remove loose items from garden and balconies.

The damaging winds are expected to peak at about 4pm.

The cold front is also bringing blizzard conditions to the southern ranges where up to 80 millimetres of snow fell overnight. However NBN weatherman Gavin Morris says snow is unlikely on the Barrington Tops.
