GREYHOUND STRIKE LOOMS

The Leader of the Opposition says he’ll call for an upper house inquiry into the greyhound industry, claiming its being robbed of funding.

Racing Minister George Souris was unavailable for comment, as a Hunter-led strike gathered momentum and threatens to bring the sport to a standstill for 13 days.

  1. I have helped rescue quite a few ex racing greyhounds, left at the vet to be euthanised. NSW puppy farms some 8-10 thousand every year, without homes to go to when they finish racing, all whilst the industry makes millions.

Puppy farming for profit must end. That is what this story should be about.

  2. This agreement was put in place with the approval of all three codes, including the greyhound racing folks. This was not foisted on them – they AGREED to it! To now say you don’t like it, well, that’s a shame, because you put yourselves in this positions! If you can go without racing for 13 days, why not 13 months? Or 13 years? Or how about for the rest of the 99 year agreement? That would benefit the greyhounds. Greyhounds deserve better.

  3. Tony Gannon, I don’t see anybody supporting your side on this. If you’re not getting paid for the work you’re doing, then you need to take that up with your employer. Or are you trying to be metaphorical? You and your coworkers agreed to this policy, you locked yourselves in for 99 years, and so this is your fault. If you don’t like what you’re getting now, then perhaps you should seek a job in a more worthwhile industry.

  4. Greyhound racing is wrong on so many different levels! I love my three legged greyhound (who broke her leg racing), but everyday is a struggle for her- you are all shameful! These are living, breathing, dogs, and deserve better! If we did what you did to our dogs we’d go to jail!

  5. Greyhound racing is CRUEL, INHUMANE, AND BARBARIC. The beautiful dogs pay the price, while greedy people such a trainers, etc, just want money at the expense of the dog. They were never meant to race but be with people that love them, and take care of them, NOT ABUSE THEM, RACE THEM, TORTURE THEM, AND THROW THEM AWAY When through with them.
I will be elated the day grey hound racing stops over the entire world. It is a horrible horrible sport.

  6. When are the greyhound breeders and trainers going to stand up for all the greyhounds that are killed each year?
Of course they want, these people care about money and that is it.
Greyhound racing is exists because these people can’t get real jobs other than exploiting animals. Animals that have to run for their lives.
Greyhound racing NSW should donate ALL the money they save and give to rescue groups – most receive NOT ONE CENT from the this dog killing industry, but are run by people who spend their time and money caring for and re-homing these beautiful dogs dumped and disposed of by these disgusting people and putrid industry.

  7. I think the above comments have pretty much said it all! The sooner these tracks close for good, the sooner Greyhounds can start to have the life they deserve instead of being utterly exploited and abused in the name of entertainment and to make their owners, bookmakers, track owners and gamblers money!

  8. Greyhound is nothing but animal abuse for tens of thousands of one breed of dog just for profit only to be killed from their racing owners and trainers who vow they love them.

I hope this strike proves how this industry is no longer needed nor wanted as it continues to decline. This is an out of date institution of a community of bogans who cant obtain real job.

  9. The two beautiful ex-racers on my couch have no sympathy for you lot, and neither do I! Like thousands of others across the country, they were young, healthy dogs due to be destroyed for not being competitive, before being rescued by an independent organisation. END greyhound racing, and stop these dogs being over bred, exploited and mistreated, and then discarded as “wastage”.

  10. Some people argue that Greyhounds are “born to run” and perhaps they are. But they’re born to run along a beach or in a park NOT around a race track to earn money for their owners/trainers. Greyhound racing is commercial animal cruelty where the animals are killed if they don’t perform. Animals are not “throwaway” items and should not be treated as such. The people involved in this industry need to find themselves real jobs, go out and earn their own money instead of forcing these dogs to do it for them. The Greyhound racing industry WILL BE stopped, it’s just a matter of time. I say, the sooner the better.

  11. It’s not a job mate. Plain and simple. Love your dogs so much? Race them for ribbons only. It’s good to see Australians finally waking up and seeing this killing game for what it is, blood sport. The elusive Brett Lee clone has you all kidding yourselves. Plenty of better jobs out there that don’t involve mindless animal wastage, and they might even pay you for your 21 hours. Have a go at one of those jobs instead.

  12. you make me sick, making money off greyhounds, discarding them when they no longer perform, not to mention all the ones that dont even make it to the track. You deserve nothing.

  13. I will never ever understand why Greyhounds are treated this way,They are the gentle giants of the dog world, Close down the tracks now!!!

  14. Robbed???? Perhaps less and less individuals are gambling on greyhound racing because they are starting to realize it’s an incredibly cruel and inhumane sport. Why not ban it? Haven’t we moved forward and out of archaic times condoning cruel and barbaric sport? Shame on you!

  15. This is an industry full of SHAME! I would rather see an inquiry as to where all the greyhounds go when they are not fast enough, not deemed worthy of life because they are not making this rotten dirty industry enough money. They just disappear, thousands of them. I have a grey who is the most divine, gentle and gorgeous dog I have ever had. I can not wait for the day when this industry DIES!

  16. Greyhound racing should be illega, its cruel and I cannot believe they expect hard working Australians to subsidize this horrifically cruel activity.

There are so many better things for my hard earnt tax money to go to hospitals, cancer research, disability programs, RSPCA – not this. Wake up and stop this so called sport once and for all the idiots that will bet on this wi bet on anything so find a way of them to gamble that doesn’t involve horrific cruelty and abandonment of greyhounds!

  17. Why is my comment “still awaiting moderation”? It’s no worse than other peoples’ comments. Obviously, they like the truth to remain hidden.

  18. Great, so you’re not happy with the profits you’re making off innocent animals, who you’ll kill without batting an eyelid once they stop being profitable? Solution: leave the industry and stop participating in glorified animal abuse.

  19. You guys are so misinformed! Having been a greyhound owner for the past couple of years I can tell you that to anyone in the greyhound game you all sound like fools, so best keep your ridiculous opinions to yourselves. From an early age before they are given any introduction to racing or training, Greyhounds show an enthusiasm to sprint and they genuinely get excited in doing so. It is in their nature to free gallop which every trainer embraces. Where would this breed of dog be without racing??? Locked up in your backyards or as Juta Stokes’ comment says on the couch??? This country is becoming more and more whitewashed by Greens and Feminist opinions. It makes me sick!

  20. Greyhound racing is cruel why don’t you spend some taxpayer money looking after and re homing some of these beautiful creatures. The whole industry should be banned who even watches it anymore certainly not anyone educated who understands the extreme cruelty involved if one of the animals gets injured or isn’t earning its keep, they are tossed aside like rubbish.ban greyhound racing and get these people to find real jobs!

  21. Luke Crawford,

My grey loves sprinting around the back yard, He runs free! He also enjoys the sofa from time to time. Is best mates with the cat and my young children. He deserves this wonderful life as a companion animal. Not that of an expendable money making machine. You are the one that sounds and looks like a fool. I can not wait for the day when this cruel sport is shut down permanently!
