The Planning Assessment Commission has green-lit a project to extend the life of the Hunter’s Bengalla coal mine, a move that will generate more than a billion dollars in royalties for the state and federal governments.
It follows a public hearing in Muswellbrook, late last year.
The commission concluded the economic benefits of extending the mine’s life by 21-years, outweighed environmental concerns.
The decision is also expected to safeguard hundreds of jobs.
