FARM DOG CONTRACTS HENDRA VIRUS

A farm dog has been put down after contracting the Hendra virus on the same property west of Macksville where a horse was infected earlier this month.

Other animals on the property will be re-tested and the owners are being re-assessed by New South Wales Health.

Authorities say it’s only the second reported case of the deadly disease in a dog – one was diagnosed in Queensland two years ago after coming into contact with an infected horse.

Hendra virus has now been confirmed in four horses on the mid north coast this year.
