PUBLIC AND POLICE TO GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

The public is invited to get up close and personal with the NSW Police Force during a Police Community Day today in Newcastle.

A number of specialist sections of the force will be attending including a Polair helicopter, Water Police, Police Rescue Squad, Highway Patrol and the Police Dog Unit.

Senior Constable Juan Mahoney says the day takes place in the first week of the school holidays and families are encouraged to attend.

“The kids will be thrilled with the big toys on offer… such as the Police helicopter, the highway cars and the ever-popular dog unit. It will certainly be worthwhile for those who attend. There will (also) be a mini fitness camp for the kids,” he said.

The day is held in conjunction with a travelling display at Newcastle Museum celebrating 150 years of Policing in NSW.

Juan emphasises the importance of the day in breaking down the barriers that can exist between police and the public.

“When the majority of people have dealings with the police, it is mostly a negative response… they have been arrested or have been issued infringements for whatever reason… (or they have been) traumatised as they have generally been a victim of crime”.

“Our aim is to put ourselves on display as a community source… (where) people can approach us”.

The Community Day will be held at Newcastle Foreshore Park between 10am and 2pm.
