TWEED SAYS NO TO PARKING METERS

Parking meters have proven no match for people power on the Tweed, with council scrapping plans to introduce them.

All seven councillors last night voted against trialling paid parking at selected boat ramps, beaches and parks.

“It would have seen the end of a lot of small business. And it would have just stopped tourists coming to the area.”

Councillors also knocked back an increase to their pay-packets.

They’ll earn about $17,500 in 2013/14, while the Mayor will take home just over $38,000.
