A court has been told any trial of former Catholic priest John Sidney Denham could take between one and three months.
Newcastle District Court today heard there are 17 complainants, with offences dating back to the 1970s and 80s.
Denham is facing 50 charges of indecent assault, as well as buggery offences.
His barrister, Mike Smith, told the court he’s seeking a change of venue to Sydney.
A trial date may be fixed next Friday, depending on Denham’s plea.
