SUBSIDY FOR RAISING HOMES ABOVE GRAFTON FLOODS

The Clarence Valley Council has endorsed a new policy to help families raise their houses above flood levels.

Subsidies of $15,000 will be offered to people in Grafton, whose dwellings are below the 20-year flood level.

Down stream at Brushgrove the subsidy will be as much as $50,000.

The council says raising structures above flood levels is the most cost effective measure to protect dwellings.

The new policy does not apply to houses in urban areas protected by levees.
