For some it was a life-changing experience, with many ditching their walkers to be a part of the action.

  1. My family and I watched the story relating to the aged care homes across the Gold Coast celebrating the end of their very own Commonwealth Games event.

I just thugh you might known about a little about the gentleman in the wheel chair who stated that he “just took off like a rocket”. His name is Mervyn WYBROTT.

Though not known to many, Merv was the first New Zealander to win a World Title in roller skating in 1960 where he won the 20,000 meter event in Wetteren, Belgium.

On completion of this event, the USA tried to contest the victory; for there was no way that this unknown person from an unknown country could possible beat them at “their” own sport.

The USA was unsuccessful and Mervin WYBROTT was awarded with a gold medal for his efforts and this record stood until the 1990’s. This accomplishment was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records edition 1979 (with New Zealand Supplement) p.364.

Merv has always been an active person enjoying playing golf and watching any kind of sport that could possibly be put on television, football of all codes, darts etc.

In 1995 Merv was blessed with the apple of his eye, a granddaughter and in 1998 was a proud Father whom walked his only daughter down the aisle.

Sadly in 2005 Merv was found lying on the floor of his bedroom and “guys being guys” said “I just need a lie down and I’ll be right”. This not being so Merv was struck down with a massive stroke leaving him paralysed down his entire left side and wheel chair bound.

We have always enjoyed hearing of Merv’s skating accomplishments and travels around the world doing so. We are so very proud of you Poppy and love you so very much.
