Council veteran, David Wright has won the mayoral race in the Ballina Shire over his closest rival, Sharon Cadwallader by close to 2000 votes.
The Independent said it was a hard fought campaign.
“Sharon ran a very good campaign she had the a lot of people behind her basically people from the national party which was her right to do so.”
But the runner up says rumours she had political backing during her campaign are false and that she too ran an Independent race.
“The national party did not financially back me my husband and I supported the campaign with a few donations from friends and supporters.”
Sharon has been returned to council.
