A semi-trailer driver narrowly escaped harm when his rig burst into flames as he was driving north on the Pacific Highway through Urunga at one o’clock this morning.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, which destroyed the truck and melted part of its load of scrap metal.
It’s thought the fire may have started near one of the wheels and spread to a tyre.
The incident happened a few metres from where a b-double crashed into a house killing an eleven year old boy in January last year.
